| | Océ's attempt to give a second coming to the 9456 print engine. They took their tried and true 9456 II print engine (one of the best print engines produced in the last ten years) and cut out the capacity to attach a scanner so that they could sell the unit as a "new stand alone printer." Nice try Océ' but it takes more than paint to make a new product. |

| | The 9700 is in reality an emasculated 9800. Better than 95% of the parts are interchangeable between the two printers. There are substantial differences between the 9700 and the 9800 scanners. The 9700 operates at twenty-one feet per minute and very rarely has the "scan to file" features. It is generally limited to plot and "scan to print" applications. Since the 9700 is in reality a 9800 without the "oomph," it has all of the feature and shortcomings of the 9800. Océ in their infinite wisdom believed that they could fill the void between the 9600 and the 9800 with this striped down machine. What they did was create an animal that is neither "fish nor fowl." |

| | This is it, this is the big Kahuna. This is the gun that the boys from Venlow used to fire the shot heard around the world and formulate the strategy that ultimately put Xerox Engineering Systems and their massive installed base of analog equipment in their grave. Xerox, demonstrating their trademark arrogance, believed that the digital technology that the 9800 brought to the market place was something that would happen "down the line" and that no one would pay "those kinds for prices" for digital technology. At the end of the day people would, and they did, and Xerox lost their dominance in and industry they had quite literally, created.
The 9800 has become the de-facto production machine for commercial and high volume (reprographic) printing. Ninety percent of the "big shops" in the country have 9800's. Unfortunately, power corrupts and absolute poser corrupts absolutely. Over the years Océ has become as arrogant, self centered and dictatorial as Xerox was and judging from their recent performance will probably suffer the same fait.
The Japanese in the form of KIP and Ricoh have introduced high speed machines that eclipse the prodigious production power of the 9800 and simply "bang for the buck" they are more efficient to own and operate. Many of the forward thinking shops are simply declaring themselves an "Océ Free Zone." |

| | I wish someone would help me here. I simply do not understand how Oce', in their infinite wisdom, thinks they can take a Contex scanner and a Encad (Kodak) printer, paint them green; tie them together with a controller of questionable origin and think they can sell this colleague for over $40 grand. The product has been in the market for almost three years and I have yet to see one at a show that was operational. They always have a technician crawling around on them. If an integrated system is your cup of tea and you simply "must have one", save yourself $20 grand and look at the HP 815mfp. |

| | Océ's most recent attempt at keeping the 9400 print engine in the low end segment of the market. The 9400 print engine is one of the best that was ever produced. Océ has taken this tried and true performer and upped the 300 dpi output to 600 dpi. Now here is where Océ gets cagey, the 600 dpi is "off the drum," this is effectively 400 dpi on the print. Scan to file is still an expensive option. |

| | The TDS 800 is a midlife re-labeling and product upgrade of the Océ 9800. Unfortunately, like many things that happen in midlife it is more re-labeling than it is upgrade. Océ changed the controller and the software around on the 9800 and called it a TDS 800. One of the important things about the TDS 800 is that due to various "software lockouts", only Oce' authorized technicians (read NCR) can work on the system. In other words, if you buy one of these machines, you are in bed with Océ until you decide to get rid of it. And then your remarketing options are severely limited because you either have to trade it to Océ, guess who gets the short end of the stick on this deal, or try and find another poor sole who got talked into a TDS 800 when he should have purchased a 9800.
Be careful, everything Océ does is designed to benefit Océ. They do not care one about what is in the best interests of you the client. You are on the bottom rung of the pecking order and if Océ has anything to say about it you will remain there. The truth of the situation is that they make some of the best machinery and software in existence. It is sad they are so difficult to deal with. |
